Sounds silly, but for real. I have a love-hate relationship with this day and here is why; everyday is Earth day. It is. This is our home, and it's long overdue that we start celebrating it wildly and constantly. However, I like that a day like today can hone everyone's focus in home again, to where it's supposed to be. This day brings awareness to a lot of issues, as well as to a lot of love. That's what people need. Love= support. Something to re-stoke the fire and get that passion flowing, that is where change comes from. Because you wont save a world if you're not blindly stupidly in love with the miracle that our planet is, all the while being so awake to it's needs. So happy Earth day, I hope you experienced some part of our planet today that connected so deeply with your being that you are determined to lead a more conscious lifestyle.
What do I mean by "conscious lifestyle"? No, I'm not saying stop shaving your body hair, burn your shoes, and go completely off-grid... However I so support you if that's where your heart is calling you. I don't shave my legs and I'm doing just fine! (There is no "one size fits all" answer to success ya'll! No judgements here.) What I, personally, mean by being conscious is as follows;
Become aware of the effect your decisions have on the world around you. It is greater than you might originally think. How many single-use plastic items are you guilty of using? (Yep, me too) The answer is a lot, and that's where the big bad wolf of consumerism comes in. Consumerism is everything we buy, everything we think we want or think we need, everything the media tells us equals a happy life and that's why we must buy it. Must have the latest trends, must have the newest car, must drink all the starbucks lattes.
Create a relationship with the community around you. Love your local farmers and the wealth they bring to your community, opt for reusable shopping bags, drink containers, etc. Boycott animal captivity by saving the money you would have spent on tickets and start planning a trip- near or far- to witness some REAL wildlife. Support local businesses first. There are infinite ways to better the planet. One person can't save the earth necessarily. But one person with the right mindset can start a movement, and that is all it really takes. I support this domino effect, and you should too.
Anyway, I promised the online following I would share some of my favorite zones our chain on island's has to offer! So this is it. Following are some photo grabs of some spaces that really get me every time I visit. The zones that provoke magical thought of creation and conservation. These are the rewards from growing pains. You live, you learn, and if you learn wisely you will be so so rewarded. Enjoy.
This hike has got to be one of my favorites. Cliff side on Oahu's windward shore just can't be beat. Especially at Sunrise. This is the best seat in the house in my opinion if you are a morning person. Known famously as "The Dead Man's Catwalk". The state has recently town up the catwalk, but I never liked it anyway. There is a whole trail system spanning along this ridge line that is a million times lovelier and completely uncrowded. For my night dwellers, this is also a stunning full moon midnight hike. The moon lights up the coral heads in the ocean below and the water is fluorescent.
Favorite waterfall thus far on our pretty island chain. Gentle trek up the riverbed leads you to this. Huge natural pool underneath and the whole place to yourself. I refuse to disclose the location as this pretty thing is on private property and few but locals know of it's existence. If you ever find it, I'm so happy for you. It's a gem and deserves to be seen, but I choose to not further the foot traffic! Happy hunting.
Sunrise on Waimanalo Bay beach. Again, East side zones are the best sunrises for obvious reasons. This is my favorite spot to slack line. Nothing makes you more in love with our Earth like getting a good sweat in while the sun peaks over the horizon then rinsing off in the ocean.
Once again, morning people!!! Sunrise on top of Haleakala crater is amazing. If you want to feel like you are waking up on mars, I highly recommend. This volcano has the best way of making me realize how small and insignificant my personal problems really are... And how monumental all the things I am thankful for are.
Anywhere you can find a space where the ocean plays with you right back is a lovely space to be. Lava tubes create the best of times. (caution advisory. Know your oceans, know your zones, don't put yourself at risk!)
Happy Happy Happy Earth Day. Love your Mother. She is our home.
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
